Don’t Give Up On Problems: A Lesson on Persistence

Did you ever think that an “audit” exercise can be a learning experience? Well, if you really ‘want to’ learn, you can find lessons almost everywhere. You just have to keep doors of your mind open!

While discussing a problem, the audit consultant, with many years of experience, said the following:

If we have a family member who is disabled, we do everything we can, till the time we can to ensure their well being. We don’t give up. Mothers teach their kids with a lot of patience. Sometimes, a kid acts up, doesn’t obey and creates difficult situations. A mother is still patient and tries to counsel the kid in different ways. But she doesn’t give up.

Senior management and business leaders play a similar role in an organization. There are problems, roadblocks, dead-ends, difficult issues and choices. As a leader, you have two choices. To give up, or to be persistent in finding solutions. There is always something you can do to solve the problems, only if you have patience to deal with it. You just have to care enough.

That was a very useful advice, not only for senior management, but also for professionals. It is amazing how easily we give up or pass the buck to someone higher up when faced with difficult choices/situations.

So here are a few critical questions:

  • As a professional, how soon do you give up?
  • From your current challenges, what problems will you be able to solve, if you persisted a little more?
  • How can you involve others meaningfully in a way that they can help you solve the problems you think are unsolvable?

Have a GREAT start into the week!
